The Anglican Centre in Rome UK Friends’ Lecture in Westminster Abbey
This year’s Anglican Centre in Rome UK Friends’ Lecture in Westminster Abbey will take place at 6.15pm on Thursday 9th December. Dr Meg Warner, a distinguished Old Testament scholar currently based in Manchester, will speak on ‘A Resilient Return: Church, Community, and Self in the Wake of COVID.’ Her biography is printed at the bottom of this invitation. Meg writes,
‘Resilience’ is everywhere. We all want more of it, and increasingly we expect those around us to have more of it also. What does it mean – individually and collectively – to be resilient? This lecture will take the biblical motif of ‘exile and return’ as a model for exploring the joys and myriad challenges of returning from what many have experienced, during the pandemic, as a kind of exile from our own lives. How is resilience being demanded of our churches, our communities and ourselves, and what resources can we draw upon, as we travel the road of return?
The Lecture, on such a timely theme, will be followed by a reception in Poets’ Corner, generously sponsored by the Clergy Support Trust. There will be plenty of time for questions, and our Director, Archbishop Ian Ernest, will join us from Rome, to give an update about the Centre’s current work.

Dr Meg Warner is Tutor in Old Testament and Hebrew Bible at Northern College at Manchester’s Luther King Centre for Theology and Ministry, having taught previously at King’s College London and Trinity College Melbourne. She is a Reader in the Church of England, a sought-after speaker throughout the UK and internationally, and a long-time friend of the Anglican Centre in Rome. From 2018 to 2020 Meg was a member of the University of Exeter’s ‘Tragedy and Congregations Project’ and is lead editor of Tragedies and Christian Congregations: The Practical Theology of Trauma (Routledge). She is also the author of numerous books, including Abraham: A journey through Lent and Joseph: A story of resilience (both SPCK). Her forthcoming book is Effective Stories: Reading Genesis Through the Lens of Resilience (Sheffield Phoenix).
