CleanTrade Hackathon: The future of UK policy on supply chain emissions

Charity & Causes

Bringing together people interested in supply chain emissions and climate policy to rapidly and collaboratively create new ideas.

This day will bring together people interested in climate policy relating to global supply chains to rapidly and collaboratively engineer:

  • ideas for UK government policies to reduce supply chain emissions
  • ways of bringing policy solutions to life

Ideas for UK government policies to reduce supply chain emissions

We know there is a growing patchwork of policies bubbling up from sustainability pioneers in different sectors and regulators in different countries. Some examples: LETIโ€™s product standards for new buildings, developed by 100+ people working in the built environment calls for 100% of all designed new buildings to be zero carbon including embodied emissions by 2025, and for 100% of all built new buildings to be zero carbon by 2030; the EUโ€™s carbon border adjustment mechanism will extend the carbon price of its Emissions Trading Scheme to imports of iron, steel, cement, aluminium, fertilisers, hydrogen, electricity generation, some manufactured products such as screws and bolts, and potentially cars. We want to uncover more of these, and new ideas that people have.

Ways of bringing a policy solution to life

We're a firm believer that โ€œWeโ€™ve got the technology to save us, but not the stories that engage usโ€ (Meghan Kennedy-Woodlard). We hope to make this patchwork of policies into a compelling opportunity for UK politicians.

The ways of bringing the policies to life might be research into a companies importing a lot of embodied carbon, or an idea for a stunt to get this area of policies into the front pages.
