Biographers of Byron, somewhat understandably, paint a negative picture of the young Anglo-Italian, if they mention him at all, depicting a petulant and quick-tempered upstart with literary pretensions. In 2016 Andrew and Suzanne Edwards retraced Byron’s famous journey into exile, but with their focus on Polidori’s attitudes and experiences of the trip through his diary, letters and works. This talk will explore the poet’s journey via the incidents and events recorded by his physician, with the intention of sympathetically portraying Polidori as a three-dimensional human-being, warts and all, rather than a simple caricature.
