Coming of age – Professor Peter Barnes

Abstract

Professor Peter Barnes will reminisce on the history of the NHLI and his research into airways disease. He will discuss his recent research into accelerated lung ageing and cellular senescence in COPD, which has identified novel therapeutic targets and shown that lung ageing may even be reversible. He will also discuss how cellular senescence spreads and how this may result in disease progression and comorbidities (including cardiovascular ageing) and multimorbidity of the elderly.

Bio

Peter Barnes FRS is Professor of Thoracic Medicine at the NHLI and was head of respiratory medicine at Imperial until 2017. He was previously Consultant Respiratory Physician at Hammersmith Hospital until he moved to the Royal Brompton Hospital as Professor of Clinical Pharmacology in 1985 and succeeded Margaret Turner-Warwick in 1987. His research has focused on cellular and molecular mechanisms and therapy of airway diseases and has been the most highly cited respiratory researcher in the world over the last 30 years with >1,500 peer-reviewed papers and >150,000 citations.

He was a founding FMedSci (1998) and elected FRS in 2007. He is also a member of the Academy of Europe and the American Association of Physicians, Master Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, Fellow of the ERS and ATS, Honorary Fellow of St Catharine’s College Cambridge and of the British Pharmacological Society, with honorary degrees from four European universities. He served as President of the ERS in 2013/14.
