How far have we come? Disability identity politics in the UK

Other

With Tom Shakespeare FBA (Chair), Khairani Barokka, Liz Sayce and Alexander Toft

Is there a disability culture in the UK? What might stop someone with an impairment from identifying as disabled? And are disability rights truly international, or are they a privilege of the Global North?

Our Summer Showcase exhibit โ€˜Projected Booksโ€™ demonstrates a little-known WWII invention that made it possible for thousands of people with disabilities to read. In this free event, British Academy Fellow Tom Shakespeare will lead a panel of experts to reflect on the growth and meaning of the UKโ€™s disability rights movement and demonstrate what we would all gain through better accessibility.

Our panel is:

Professor Tom Shakespeare FBA (Chair), Professor of Disability Research at London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

Khairani Barokka, writer, poet and artist in London, whose work centres disability justice as anti-colonial praxis.

Liz Sayce, former head of Disability Rights UK, mental health commentator (lived experience and policy); visiting Senior Fellow, LSE

Alexander Toft, Research Fellow for the Nottingham Centre for Children, Young People and Families

Register for free or drop in on the day. Please see the British Academy's Privacy Policy and Event FAQs.

This talk is part of the British Academyโ€™s Summer Showcase, a free festival of ideas for curious minds. Meet the researchers shaping our world.
