Impactful AI - 4th MeetUp

Science & Technology

Want to change the world for better with AI? So do we! Come and learn how great minds are solving impactful problems with ML and AI!

In this meetup series, we want to inspire everyone to use or implement Machine Learning and AI not only to serve great causes but also to have a demonstrable positive impact on society. We’ll be talking about how we can use AI to do just that, through applying it to health, education, democracy, nutrition and more, but also how we can technically implement that while ensuring what we build is ethical.

Our speakers will be:

Woochan Hwang Co-Founder @ Affect.AI

> Personalizing depression care with robust monitoring through vocal biomarkers

Abstract: Depression affects 19.7% of UK adults and 300 million people worldwide. However, it will often take months to over a year to find the appropriate treatment option. One of the main obstacles for improvement is the heterogeneity of depression and the lack of objective measurements.

To solve this problem, Affect.AI is developing a personalized, speech-based deep learning algorithm to provide frequent and reliable severity assessment. Using audio recordings as a digital biomarker offers unique advantages including objectivity and the ability to sample data more continuously in a natural environment (i.e. outside of clinics). Robust monitoring will provide the foundation for measurement-based care and allow for earlier diagnosis, personalized management, and improved patient self-awareness. We will discuss how clinical depression monitoring is different from emotion recognition tasks, and the additional ethical/workflow challenges that arise because of the clinical nature of the problem.

Darsh Kodwani, Data Scientist @ EcoSync

> AI to reduce energy waste

EcoSync is a multi-award winning spin-out/start-up company of Oxford University, developing a smart heating system combining artificial intelligence with MIT technologies - applied to real buildings. By applying cutting edge statistical and ML techniques we have shown that the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of buildings can be reduced by over 60%. In this talk we describe some of the technical challenges and how we overcome them.

We'll announce our 3rd speaker soon so stay tuned!
