Insurance Sector: New Strategic Opportunities with China

China’s insurance market has grown rapidly to become the world’s second largest. As we enter a new decade, the Chinese insurance sector is now entering a new phase of increasing maturity and greater opening-up to foreign investment, with the market set to overtake the US by the mid-2030s. Numerous opportunities are emerging for overseas insurance companies. This evolving market context makes the Chinese market all the more compelling to those who have not yet entered, while those already active in the market need to consider the implications of the changing landscape and how best to adapt their strategy. Opportunities to strike strategic partnerships and set up collaboration with China are also increasingly compelling, such as tapping capital investment from China, gaining access to China risks which can be underwritten in overseas financial centres such as London, or collaborating on InsurTech. You are cordially invited to join an expert panel event exploring these opportunities and the challenges to be overcome.

Madame Bao, Minister Counsellor for Economic and Commercial Affairs, Chinese Embassy to the UK: Ms. Bao Ling is Head of the Commercial Section at the Chinese Embassy to the UK.

Benjamin Schmittzehe, CEO and Partner, Schmittzehe & Partners: Ben is head of Schmittzehe & Partners, an Asia-focused management consulting company founded in 2005. He has almost 25 years of Asia experience and shares his time between the company’s UK and China (Shanghai) offices. He has advised clients across numerous sectors, including the insurance sector in China.

Martin Mankabady, Partner, Dentons London: Martin is Global Chair of Dentons' Insurance Group and has particular experience in mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and corporate finance. Martin advises across the market, and clients include Lloyd's of London managing agents, insurance brokers, run-off consolidators and InsurTech start-ups/investors.

Frank Niu, Partner, Dentons Beijing: Frank has extensive experience in foreign direct investments in China through joint ventures, acquisitions, wholly-owned subsidiaries and other forms. He also assists foreign investors in identifying, managing and resolving legal and regulation issues in their daily operations in China.

Richard Barham, (Panel Chair), Partner, Dentons London: Richard has particular experience in mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures across a number of sectors, including financial services. Most of his work is cross-border, and in the last 4 years he has worked on a range of transactions for Chinese clients.
