Metamycota; Meet The Artist, and The Inspiration

Artist Anthony Bennett discusses his art with world renowned soil scientist Professor Duncan Cameron, who Anthony describes as his 'Muse'

METAMYCOTA examines the fundamental perpetual relationship between Humans and Fungi, our interdependance, our commonality, and anticipates our future relationships in respect of climate change and the Anthropocene. It features more than 20 key artworks selected from recent #artandscience projects: ‘Gaiamycota’, ’Deadkidsfingers’ , ‘The Gene Genie’ and ‘Metamycota’.

‘Metamycota’, is Anthonys first solo show in London, postponed from last year due to Covid-19, now rescheduled to take place: 29th July-1st August 2021 (Opening times; 12-6pm daily) at Studio 1.1 Gallery, 57a Redchurch Street, Shoreditch, London E2 7DJ

About Artist Anthony Bennett

Anthony describes himself as a ‘Protean’ artist. His work, primarily sculptural, exists/happens in many forms, media and environments. His artwork is inspired by difficult questions about the future of human existence on the Earth. He has been described as a ‘serial collaborator’, purposefully working with non artists and revelling in the challenges that precipitate therefrom. Anthony co-conceived the ‘Festival of the Mind’, a bi-annual festival of art created collaboratively by artists and academics at The University of Sheffield.

About Professor Duncan Cameron

Duncan Cameron is Professor of Plant and Soil Biology in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences at the University of Sheffield where his research group investigates the physiology and chemistry of plant-microbe interactions in the soil in the context of sustainable agriculture and global food security. Duncan is co-director of the University of Sheffield Flagship research institute, the Institute for Sustainable Food and is the University of Sheffield's lead academic for the N8 AgriFood program. Duncan's research is highly interdisciplinary, with collaborative projects linking between science, social science and the arts. He is actively engaged in public engagement, recent projects include the multi-media sci-art collaboration, Gaiamycota, the Sound of Science, and AquaKulture. Duncan actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion at The University of Sheffield as a gay role model.
