During her inaugural lecture, Anwar Tappuni, Professor of Oral Medicine, will talk about the interchange between her clinical practice and research. She will recount the series of events that helped evolve her research interest in the fields of HIV and Sjögren’s syndrome. Professor Tappuni will describe her journey as an educator and her contribution to the field of learning and teaching.
Professor Anwar Tappuni obtained her PhD from the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in 1992 and subsequently did her clinical training in oral medicine at Guy’s Hospital. She was appointed as a Lecturer at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, QMUL in 2007. She founded and directed the MSc in Oral Medicine at Guy’s in 1998 and the Master in Clinical Dentistry in Oral Medicine at QMUL in 2013. At present, she is the Director of the Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry and the Oral Medicine Academic Lead. Anwar leads a multidisciplinary clinic at the Institute of Dentistry for Sjögren’s syndrome. She has considerable publications output including peer-reviewed papers, NICE-approved Treatment Guidelines and in-press Oxford Text Book on Sjögren’s Syndrome. She has several international and national roles including Honorary Professor in School of Dentistry, Saveetha University, India, President of the Oral Medicine and Pathology Group of the British Society for Oral and Dental Research, Immediate Past President of the Oral Medicine and Pathology Group of the International Association for Dental Research. She chaired the International Organising Committee and the meeting of the 8th World Workshop for Oral Health and Disease in AIDS in Bali, Indonesia in September 2019. She holds the BDA Roll of Distinction for outstanding services to UK dentistry.
