San Mei Gallery is pleased to present ONE, a group exhibition curated by Subsidiary Projects and Jeanette Gunnarsson.

The exhibition brings together five artists, Johnny Izatt-Lowry, Robin Megannity, Jessica Wetherly, Ellie Pratt and Shinuk Suh, in an exploration of loneliness and isolation. ONE, the loneliest number, considers isolation as a physical space that we all inhabit. Questioning what it means to be solitary, outside of and isolated within our contemporary, globalised and digital world. ONE explores this notion, not in the sense of the misanthropic, but considering the structural, institutional, political and personal perspectives.

Conceptualised in November 2019, prior to the current pandemic, the concept of the exhibition became an omen of what was to come. The five artists have been able to further question the notion of “ONE” throughout the year and have generated work reflecting on this theme, as “isolation” takes on a new dimension and meaning.

Johnny Izatt-Lowry (1995, Durham, UK) is a London based painter. In 2019 he completed an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art UCL. In 2020 Cooke Latham Gallery held a solo exhibition of his work; By Day, But Then Again By Night. Previous group exhibitions include Melancholymics, The Wunderwall (Antwerp, 2020), Paintings on, and with, paper, Cob Gallery (London, 2020) and No time like the present, Public Gallery (London, 2020).

Robin Megannity (1985, North West of England) is currently completing his MA in Painting at the Manchester School of Art. His work has been acquired by the Government Art Collection UK as well as private collections in the UK and Europe. In June 2020 Kristian Day gallery curated a solo presentation of his work, Ferme la Fenêtre.

Jessica Wetherly (London, UK) completed her MA Sculpture, Royal College of Art in 2019. In 2020 she had two solo exhibitions; Song of the Siren, Korai Project, (Nicosia, Cyprus), and Net: Camouflage, Black Box Gallery, UCA, (Farnham, Kent). She has also been awarded the Stanley Picker Scholarship and has been selected for several residencies internationally including Bilbao Arte Residency (Basque Country, Spain) and Wild Biyoo, (The Tribe Goa, India).

Ellie Pratt (b.1991, Kent, UK) is a painter who lives and works in London. She completed an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2015. Recent exhibitions include group shows at Pm/Am (London), Mackintosh Lane (London), and V.O Curations (London).

Shinuk Suh (1988, Seoul, South Korea) is a London based sculptor. In 2019 he completed an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art UCL. Solo presentations of his work include Man(u)fractured at Unit1 Gallery Workshop (London, 2019). His work has also been included in different group exhibitions, highlighting Rendered Reality at the Korean Cultural Centre in London (2020) and FBA Futures 2020, Mall Galleries (London).

Subsidiary Projects is a multidisciplinary artist-run platform run by Natalia Gonzalez Martin and Nina Silverberg. The platform is focused on working collaboratively with artists, designers, curators and other organisations to facilitate artistic processes both online and as physical events.

Jeanette Gunnarsson is an independent curator and art educator who has been working with Kristian Day gallery since their inaugural exhibition in London in 2015. In addition to putting on exhibitions, she is passionate about creating programs and engagement with a wide and inclusive audience.
