White Arkitekter’s quarterly event series titled ‘Refine’ will explore how we can work towards our goals of carbon neutrality and more regenerative practices. In this first event of the series on Thursday, 29th February, at our London office, we will look to ‘Refine: The Workplace’.
This kick-off event will be part housewarming party for our new office and part provocation, questioning the future of sustainable workplace provision in the city.
The decision to adopt a circular approach to our own office fit-out was prompted by a growing awareness of the significant environmental impact of the commercial building sector. With the building sector responsible for 40% of global carbon emissions and commercial buildings contributing 15% to this figure, we recognized the need for a sustainable, energy-efficient refurbishment model. In London alone, where approximately 267 million square meters of office space undergo a seven-year fit-out cycle, the environmental consequences are substantial.
We will share learnings from our own office refurbishment in a brief presentation of our sustainability write-up report. Following this, we have invited representatives from the supply chain, developers, and the City of London for a lively panel discussion chaired by Hattie Hartman of the Architects Journal.
We will consider the future of the workplace in the city, covering issues of renovations, retrofitting, and change of use; trends and behavior change patterns, looking at areas such as Canary Wharf and the City of London – where do people want to be and what lessons are learned, why are we still building so tall?
