'Six years on a sub-tropical island'

From 2016 to 2022 Mary Collins worked at a new postgraduate university, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST). This period saw OIST climb into the top 10 universities in the world for research quality according to Nature Index, double the number of Faculty Members, and celebrate the award of the Nobel Prize to Adjunct Professor Svante Paabo. Mary will describe her contribution at OIST, including installing fish tanks, delivering clinical COVID-19 PCR testing for Okinawa, and initiating research into COVID-19 vaccine response in elderly Okinawans.

Speaker bio

Professor Mary Collins is a virologist and immunologist. From 1997 until 2016 she was a Professor of Immunology at University College London. Her research there included work on viral vectors for gene delivery and the effect of viral proteins on cell signaling. From 2005 to 2015 she led the MRC/UCL Centre for Medical Molecular Virology, a research and training Centre focused on persistent viral infections. It is 25 years since she gave her previous inaugural lecture.
