Professor Joanna Newman, Provost and Deputy Vice Chancellor

Lecture title: Bound for Nowhere: Refugees, Migration and History

Lecture abstract: Professor Joanna Newman's inaugural lecture presents a case study from the refugee crisis of the 1930s to frame a broader discussion of the ways in which historical events shape attitudes towards migration and refuge to this day. How do teaching and learning in relation to minority histories help us navigate an ever more populist world?

Professor Laura Hammond, Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Knowledge Exchange & Professor of Development Studies

Lecture title: A Region on the Move: Migration and Displacement in the Horn of Africa

Lecture abstract: Migration and displacement are key features of the development context in the Horn of Africa, yet are often considered aberrations from 'normal' life or problems to be solved. The lecture will present key findings and analysis based on my 30-year engagement and research on migration and displacement in the region, including most recently the work of the EU-funded Research & Evidence Facility.
