Surviving critical illness; intensive care and beyond

Working with patients, family members and health care staff to co-design interventions which support recovery

By Dr Suzanne Bench PhD, Professor of Critical Care Nursing, Institute of Health and Social Care, LSBU

Description: Admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) is a traumatic event. Appropriate support for the patient, family and healthcare staff are vital to optimise recovery. Critical illness affects survivors and their family members physically, psychologically, and socially. Long term problems negatively impact quality of life and the ability to return to previous work and social roles.

This lecture provides an overview of research and quality improvement work focused on understanding peoplesโ€™ experiences and working with patients, family members and health care staff to co-design interventions, which support recovery.
