Talk: Hybridity and Exchange: Japanese Fashion in Europe in the 1980/90s

Performing & Visual Arts

This talk will explore how an increased awareness of Japanโ€™s economic power coincided with Japanese fashion.

As part of the public programme of the Zaha Hadid Foundation's exhibition, Zaha's Moonsoon: An Interior in Japan, this talk will explore how an increased awareness of Japanโ€™s economic power coincided with Japanese fashion becoming an even more desirable commodity in the West during the 1980s. Fashion designers like Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto became fixtures on the Parisian catwalks. At the same time, Japanese street styles, subcultures and traditional clothes entered the western fashion vocabulary, and a significant impact for years to come. The talk will be followed by a Q&A and end with a drinks reception.

Speaker: Claire Wilcox.

Convener: Jane Pavitt, Head of Research and Learning, ZHF
