The Business of Cities & The DNA of Cities

Business & Professional

We knowΒ that about 25% of National Governments have urban policies, but in the past decade more than 100 businesses have started to adopt strategies for engaging with cities. Why do they that? What is City Strategy for a business? Where is the relationship between business and cities going forwardsΒ and what does it mean for national urban policies? At the same time the idea of cities having a unique DNA is catching on. If a city can discover and align with its DNA it can develop identity, soft power, and build a sense of belonging. So what is the DNA of a city? Can it evolve or is it fixed? What is the best means to find it and use it?

Greg ClarkΒ is an urbanist, who has worked with more 300 cities over a 30 year career. He is Senior Advisor, Future Cities and New Industries, at HSBC, Chairman of The Business of Cities, a research group based at UCL STEaPP, a Global Fellow at Brookings Institution and at the Urban Land Institute, and Chairman of the Investment and Programmes Committees at Transport for London. He previous roles include Executive Director of the London Development Agency, Chief Advisor on City & Regional Development at the Office of the UK Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the OECD Forum of Cities and Regions. Greg has been chairman of international advisory boards and strategy groups for more than 20 cites.Β Greg became Honorary Professor at UCL STEaPP in 2014 and supports theΒ STEaPP Urban Innovation Lab.

The lecture will be followed by a networking and drinks reception.Β
