Inaugural lectures are an occasion of significance in our professors’ careers at the University. They provide an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our recently appointed professors who are undertaking research, innovation, engagement and teaching activities in their field of expertise.

Our lectures are open to all LSBU Group staff & students as well as to members of the public and are free of charge. They are taking place in person and will be recorded. They are not being live streamed at present.

Title: The Energy Crisis & Sustainability in Developing Countries and the Built Environment Sector

Description: This lecture will be delivered by Professor Obas John Ebohon, Professor of Sustainability & Environmental Law and Director of the Centre for Integrated Delivery of the Built Environment (IDoBE), at the School of the Built Environment and Architecture, LSBU

Professor Ebohon will take us through how his interest in energy sustainability and development have driven his research from initially looking at energy challenges in developing countries to the challenges of mainstreaming sustainability into built environment policies and strategies. He will trace the concept of sustainability to economic development literature, and dwell on the initial mistake of leaving the built environment sector out of the sustainability debate and take us through the earlier pushback by built environment professionals when the sector was identified as affording the greatest opportunities to address the consequences of accelerating global environmental degradation and attending climate change and emergencies. We will learn of his contribution to the sustainability debates and focus for the future.

Biography: John’s research interests span across energy, sustainability and development in the built and natural environments, with focus on developing countries. John has published widely and supervised higher degree students on built environment topics, particularly in areas of scope and challenges of mainstreaming sustainability into built environment delivery strategies and processes. He has also delivered bespoke courses, seminars, and keynote addresses on demand.

John continues to consult for unilateral and multilateral organisations, including many in the 'Third sector' on sustainability and development. John is currently serving on the international advisory board of UN-Habitat for the delivery of the bi-annual world city report. Equally, John sits on the Sustainability Expert Group for two London authorities - Lambert and Southwark Councils. He also chairs the international advisory board of GreenHubAfrica – a non-profit organisation media platform for facilitating knowledge exchange between Africa and the rest of the world, as well as educating present and future generations of Africans on the risks associating with misuse of the biophysical environment.
