The revolution in fungal diagnostic tests – integration into Health Systems

Health & Wellness

Peruvian Ambassador to London Mr Juan Carlos Gamarra and the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases Editor John McConnell open the meeting

Of the 2 million serious fungal infections estimated in Central and South America and Caribbean, over 350,000 are potentially life-threatening. The American continent is home to many airborne fungi which infect otherwise healthy people. Fungal diseases can be lethal in those with HIV infection, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive airways disease, several cancers and those hospitalized with other conditions; up to 50% of AIDS-associated deaths are due to fungal infections. Under-diagnosis and missed diagnoses contribute to unnecessary premature deaths, partly due to the limited historic availability of both diagnostic tests and treatments.
