Tourism and/in the Metropolis: A global act

Round table and discussion on metropolises, tourism development, role of architects and researchers

What forms does tourism take in today’s metropolises and metropolitan regions as places of ‘thickness’ in terms of the social and spatial dynamics? What are the implications of tourism for policies and planning? What is our role as architects, planners and researchers, how do we act to make tourism in metropolises more sustainable?

To answer these questions, researchers in the field of architecture, planning, heritage and tourism from the University of Westminster (Dr Johannes Novy and Dr Maja Jović) and Pantheon-Sorbonne (Dr Maria Gravari-Barbas and Dr Sébastien Jacquot) have invited practitioners and academics from the global North and global South to discuss individual case studies and wider ideas.

This round table will look at the way our cities are emerging into the post-pandemic reality, who are the main actors in making them more resilient and inclusive, and what can we learn from comparative case studies of London, Paris, rapidly emerging metropolises in Asia, Africa and the Americas. Our cities went from over tourism to no tourism and the panel will interrogate what practices can we retain and which voices need to be heard now that the doors to our metropolises are (re)opening.
