Energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be converted from one form to another - Issa Chaer

LSBU are proud to present this inaugural lecture by Professor Issa Chaer as part of our inaugural lectures programme for 2022-23.

Professor Chaer is Professor of Thermal Energy Systems in the School of the Built Environment and Architecture at LSBU. You can read more about his lecture, accomplishments & impressive career below. We hope you'll join us in hearing him present his findings on whole system thinking in the field of energy transfer and conversion.

Inaugural lectures are an occasion of significance in our professors’ careers at the University. They provide an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of our recently appointed professors who are undertaking research, innovation, engagement and teaching activities in their field of expertise.

Our lectures are open to all LSBU Group staff & students as well as to members of the public and are free of charge. They are taking place in person and will be recorded. They are not being live streamed at present.

You can check out the full programme of our inaugural lectures here.

Whole System Approach from Energy Transfer to Energy Transformation

Energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be converted from one form to another.

By Professor Issa Chaer PhD, CEng BEng, SFHEA, FInst.R, Professor of Thermal Energy Systems, School of the Built Environment and Architecture, LSBU.

Description: Energy transfer is the movement of energy from one location to another while Energy conversion, also sometime termed as energy transformation, is the process of changing energy from one useful form to another. Energy transfer and energy conversion occurs everywhere and every minute of the day. There are numerous forms of energy like thermal energy, electrical energy, nuclear energy, electromagnetic energy, mechanical energy, chemical energy, sound energy, solar, wind etc. Whether the energy is transferred or transformed, the total amount of energy doesn’t change, and this is known as the Law of Conservation of Energy.

Professor Chaer will take us through how his interest in energy conservation and lower carbon emission have driven his research from initially researching heat transfer in specific components to whole system thinking, making use of the Law of Conservation of Energy “Energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be converted from one form to another” to design and develop more efficient energy systems and technologies.

Biography: Issa is a Chartered Engineer with a BEng (Hons) degree in Mechanical Engineering, a PhD in heat transfer enhancement using electric field and over 25 years combined academic, research and industrial experience.

Issa is a great believer of research informed teaching and has published over 120 research articles, 4 books/book-chapters and developed over 10 academic and CPD courses on energy, renewable and low carbon research. He is currently a professor of thermal energy systems and the Associate Dean for Research at the School of the Built Environment and Architecture.

Issa’s current research themes include heat pumps and thermal energy systems/networks, alternative and renewable cooling and heating technologies, solar desalination, passive cooling systems and wellbeing in the Built environment.
