A digital excursion to UCL Research IT Services’ Data Centre

Science & Technology

See what a petabyte of storage looks like and hear how RITS are ensuring researchers can store and manage their data safely.

In this Digital Excursion to the UCL Research IT Services' Data Centre, Owain Kenway will be speaking about the Legion service and architecture as it is laid-out in Research IT Services’ data centres – the high performance file systems, cutting edge networks and the many computing generations and technologies, as well as some of the work that is being carried out therein. He will also talk about some of the challenges of supporting this infrastructure, and the work RITS has been doing collaboratively with researchers to help them leverage it efficiently and effectively.

You will see what a petabyte of storage looks like, in the form of our high performance file system and massively scalable object store. You will hear about how Research IT Services are working to provide this storage as a service which will not only enable UCL researchers and their collaborators to store their research data more safely, but also to actively manage that data.

Thomas Jones will lead the tours into the data centre and also talk about the challenges of maintaining the servers and supporting infrastructure.

Please assemble in the foyer of 1-19 Torrington Place just before 5pm.

The tour will be followed by drinks and informal discussion in room 803. All are welcome but please book as places are limited.

This event is organised by UCL Centre for Digital Humanities, which is part of the UCL Institute of Advanced Studies.
