Kudzanai-Violet Hwami was born in Zimbabwe in 1993 and spent part of her childhood in South Africa. She lives and works in London. Her work is presented at the Zimbabwe pavilion at the 2019 Venice Biennale, and her first institutional solo exhibition is currently held at Gasworks, in London.
Made with a bright colour palette, Hwamiβs paintings are often inspired by old family photographs and refer to digital imagery. Most of her works include portraits or self-portraits developing narratives of displacement and raising questions about sexuality, gender and identity.
She said, βBeing a black body, there is a sense that politics will follow you wherever you go. But how can I escape that for just a little while?β
The Talk is followed by drink reception.
