BCS Prize winning transformation of Government Education Data Services

Science & Technology

Helping the Department for Education accelerate in-housing of the National Pupil Data Achievement and Attainment Tables.

SPEAKERS

Cyril Law
Peter Rottier

SYNOPSIS

The Department for Education (DfE) is responsible for children’s education so UK students have the necessary knowledge, skills, and qualifications.

DfE previously handled 150+ data sets through a third-party vendor but wanted to bring these services in-house in 2021. Transform implemented an automated test solution to ensure quality across the newly created Learner Data Service programme.

This saved DfE Β£5 million p.a. on outsourcing and developed a high-quality product through agile ways of working and team collaboration.

At this event we will share our view from the front-line.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the Agile programme delivery approach and culture change on a complex data project, including using a steel thread MVP approach to deliver value early.
  2. Improve familiarity with DAMA-DMBOK and CMMI-DMM approaches to breaking deliverables down into components to deliver best practice data management frameworks
  3. Understand an iterative test and learn approach to deliver a MVP to prove components and develop capability
  4. Take away lessons learnt and some pointers to adopt for your future data projects
  5. Understand best practice data engineering and test engineering frameworks.
