Oscar de Muriel was born in Mexico City. He is a chemical engineer, violinist, translator and author of the Frey & McGray series, which has been translated into five languages. He currently divides his time between Mexico and the north of England.

Muerte en San Jerónimo

Someone (or something) has infiltrated the convent of San Jerónimo. Nuns and slaves alike appear sacrificed on the altar, in the manner of bloody pre-Columbian rituals.

All the sisters blame each other. They all have something to hide. Many even attribute the deaths to demonic possession.

This is the panorama that Alina, a young novice, finds herself in when she takes her robes. Together with Matea, her faithful indigenous maid, she is forced to join forces with the eccentric Juana Inés de la Cruz to unravel the terrible truth behind the murders. And they must do it in a race against time, before the deaths reach the ears of the Holy Office.

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz

1648(?) – 1694

Widely regarded as Latin America’s most influential poetess, Sor Juana was a Mexican Hieronymite nun, self-taught scholar, philosopher and pioneer in the defence of women’s rights. Her legacy spans sonnets, romances, carols and essays, on topics as varied as science, music, love, racism, politics and the dangers of religious authoritarianism – many still relevant today. A distinguished member of the New Spain intellectual elite, she befriended and influenced writers, theologists, viceroys – and vicereines!

Mexico City, 1689. Someone – or something – has infiltrated the most illustrious Hieronymite convent in New Spain. Nuns and their servants appear dead at the altar with their hearts ripped out, as if sacrificed in the old Aztec ways.

All the sisters blame each other, and some even attribute the deaths to demonic possessions, since they all have recurrent nightmares involving the devil.

Alina, a young novice, joins the convent at this point, bringing Matea, her very smart —and irreverent— indigenous servant. They join forces with the eccentric poetess Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz to unveil the truth behind the murders. And they must do this in a race against time, before the Holy Inquisition hears of the crimes.

Todas las hermanas se culpan mutuamente. Todos tienen algo que ocultar. Muchos incluso atribuyen las muertes a posesión demoníaca.

Este es el panorama en el que se encuentra Alina, una joven novicia, cuando se quita la túnica. Junto a Matea, su fiel sirvienta indígena, se ve obligada a unir fuerzas con la excéntrica Juana Inés de la Cruz para desentrañar la terrible verdad detrás de los asesinatos. Y deberán hacerlo en una carrera contrarreloj, antes de que las muertes lleguen a oídos del Santo Oficio.

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz

1648(?) – 1694

Ampliamente considerada como la poetisa más influyente de América Latina, Sor Juana fue una monja jerónima mexicana, erudita autodidacta, filósofa y pionera en la defensa de los derechos de la mujer. Su legado abarca sonetos, romances, villancicos y ensayos, sobre temas tan variados como la ciencia, la música, el amor, el racismo, la política y los peligros del autoritarismo religioso, muchos de los cuales siguen siendo relevantes en la actualidad. Un miembro distinguido de la élite intelectual de la Nueva España, se hizo amiga e influenció a escritores, teólogos, virreyes y ¡virreinas!

Ciudad de México, 1689. Alguien -o algo- se ha infiltrado en el más ilustre convento de los Jerónimos de la Nueva España. Las monjas y sus sirvientes aparecen muertos en el altar con el corazón arrancado, como sacrificados a la antigua usanza azteca.

Todas las hermanas se culpan entre sí, y algunas incluso atribuyen las muertes a posesiones demoníacas, ya que todas tienen pesadillas recurrentes que involucran al diablo.

Alina, una joven novicia, se incorpora al convento en este momento, trayendo a Matea, su muy inteligente —e irreverente— sirvienta indígena. Unen fuerzas con la excéntrica poetisa Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz para develar la verdad detrás de los asesinatos. Y deben hacerlo en una carrera contrarreloj, antes de que la Santa Inquisición se entere de los crímenes.
