Can Good Work Solve Our Productivity Puzzle?

Thursday 16th January 2020

6.00pm- 7.00pm

8 John Adam Street, London, WC2N 6EZ

Despite working longer hours, the UK produces less in five days than workers in Germany produce in four. Why does the UK perform so poorly on productivity?

There are many views on the productivity puzzle and how it can be resolved to drive up living standards in the UK. But less examined is the role played by good quality work. How might more jobs offering fair pay and terms and conditions, opportunities for training and progression, or good work-life balance, support workers to be more productive, as well as healthier and happier?

Carnegie UK Trust and the RSA have been working together with experts in the field to understand the link between good work and productivity.

In a special event at the RSA, Andy Haldane, Chief Economist at the Bank of England, Tera Allas, Director of Research at McKinsey, Kate Bell, Head of Rights at the TUC and Sarah Davidson, CEO of the Carnegie Trust, gather to discuss how we can better exploit this link for the benefit of workers.

Join us to debate:

- How can employers and policy makers support improvements in work quality and productivity?
- Which changes to jobs make for better work, and which make workers more productive?
- Can new technologies help or hinder improvements in good work and productivity?
- How can we maximise worker voice and representation to innovate and empower workers?

The event also marks the launch of ‘Can Good Work Solve the Productivity Puzzle?’, a collection of original essays exploring the contribution of good work to productivity, featuring voices from the TUC, Resolution Foundation, McKinsey, CBI, ACAS, Timewise, Be the Business, Investors in People, IPPR North and Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

Speakers: Andy Haldane, Chief Economist, Bank of England; Tera Allas CBE, Director of Research and Economics, McKinsey; Kate Bell, Head of Rights, International, Social and Economics, TUC; Sarah Davidson, CEO, Carnegie UK Trust

Chair: Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive, RSA
