IAS Book Launch: Baroque Latinity

Community & Culture

a celebration of the publication of a volume of essays on 'Baroque Latinate', the culmination of an AHRC-funded project based at UCL

This event will celebrate the publication of a volume of essays on ‘Baroque Latinity’ (https://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/baroque-latinity-9781350323445/), the culmination of an AHRC-funded project based at UCL (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/classics/research/research-projects/baroque-latinity). By looking at a wide range of case studies, the contributors explore the concept of ‘Baroque Latinity’, i.e. to what extent a particular period of early modern writing in Latin could be termed ‘Baroque’ and in what ways it differs from adjacent periods. The book thus makes a valuable contribution to Neo-Latin studies as well as to early modern research in literature.

There will be short presentations, followed by Q&A and then a drinks reception.

At the reception, there will be an opportunity for further discussion and to buy or order a copy of the volume.

Programme:

Gesine Manuwald (UCL): Introduction

Jacqueline Glomski (UCL) / Andrew Taylor (Cambridge): ‘Baroque Latinity: the project’

Alison Shell (UCL): ‘Baroque Latinity: a case study’

Stephen Harrison (Oxford): ‘Baroque Latinity: the wider context’

This is a hybrid event, with both in-person attendance and online viewing possible: please select the appropriate ticket when registering. Attendance is free of charge.
