Laboratory: Digitising Reclaim

Business & Professional

Join us at our Clerkenwell studio for fortnightly evening discussions, investigating forms of sustainable practice

Laboratory is a fortnightly free public lecture series, investigating forms of sustainable practice

Hosted at Jestico + Whiles’ Clerkenwell studio, Laboratory brings together a new generation of designers, artists, architects and researchers investigating the future of practice in an era of rapid environmental change.
From exploring emerging technologies, construction methods and bio-based materials, to thinking locally through meaningful community collaboration and utilising open source digital platforms, we will discuss how shifting our relationship with material and social resources can help build a more sustainable design and construction industry.

Digitising Reclaim

Morgan Lewis and Rob Smith (Material Index) in conversation with James Anderson

Morgan Lewis and Rob Smith, Co-Founders of Material Index, join to discuss the platform they are building to enable material re-use in construction at scale. The discussion will be hosted by Jestico + Whiles' James Anderson.architectural assistant and certified Passive House Designer, James has a detailed understanding of how to employ a high-quality fabric first architectural approach using energy-minimised passive design strategies.

Morgan Lewis (Material Index)

Morgan Lewis is the Director of Material Index, a company of engineers, software developers and architects focussed on enabling material re-use in construction at scale.
Material Index has developed software for undertaking detailed material audits of buildings undergoing deconstruction, designed around circular economy pathways. These audits result in an inventory of materials available to design teams online. Material Index also brokers construction materials from sites undergoing deconstruction that cannot be retained on site, and from reclamation businesses to the construction industry.
Morgan is an architect by background. He has formerly worked at 6a, David Kohn Architects and TopHat. He has been awarded the Scholar in Architecture Fellowship at the British School at Rome, and a Structural Timber Design Award.

James Anderson (Jestico + Whiles)

James joined Jestico + Whiles in 2019 after graduating from the University of Bath, and has since returned to the practice following a postgraduate master’s at the London School of Architecture. As a certified Passive House Designer, James has a detailed understanding of how to employ a high-quality fabric first architectural approach using energy-minimised passive design strategies.
At Jestico + Whiles, James is a key member of the internal sustainable design team (Plus Zero) and has led the development and implementation of the workflow required to undertake Whole Life Carbon assessments in house. James has an advanced knowledge of computational design and utilises this to facilitate quantifying Embodied Carbon in design at every project stage, a research-based practice he believes is paramount to reaching a future Net Zero Carbon built environment.
James’ university work focused on the potential for architectural intervention to revolutionise how we manage complex waste, with a view to establishing truly regenerative circular economies in cities.
