Forty years of failure: Private sector contracting and its impact on the NHS is an in-depth analysis of the history of outsourcing and privatisation in the NHS.

Dr John Lister, specialist health journalist and senior lecturer in Health Journalism at Coventry University, has researched and written extensively on the subject since 1984.Β Β

The report explores the historical roots, costs and consequences of the 40 years of outsourcing of services by the NHS, which meant that thousands of staff playing key roles in the NHS did not enjoy NHS terms and conditions, but were employed by private companies. Their inferior terms and conditions – most notably sick pay – meant that thousands of staff were unable to afford to take sick leave, even as the Covid-19 pandemic gathered pace.Β

Outsourcing of clinical work has diverted hundreds of millions into private profits that could otherwise have been use-fully invested in the NHS, improving the pay and conditions of staff, and making the NHS itself more resilient and better equipped to meet the challenge of the Covid-19 pandemicΒ
