Measuring public sector productivity

Business & Professional

Join us for discussions on the Atkinson Review and the future of public sector productivity measurement.

Join the Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for discussions on the Atkinson Review and the future of public sector productivity measurement.

The 2005 Atkinson Review established principles for measuring public sector output that have stood the test of time. Accurate measures of the value produced by public services are vital to understanding developed economies. Since the review’s publication, the ONS has applied these methods in its measures of public service productivity.

In 2023, the Chancellor of the Exchequer commissioned a Review of these metrics by the National Statistician to reflect changes in services over the past twenty years, particularly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Atkinson also recommended reviewing the implementation of his principles every few years. Building on wider work, this talk will discuss opportunities to develop Atkinson’s principles as part of the current Review.

Panellists:

Joe Grice (ESCoE Research Associate and Visiting Professor at King’s Business School)

Richard Heys (Deputy Chief Economist at the Office for National Statistics)

Mary O’Mahony (ESCoE Research Associate and Professor of Applied Economics at King’s Business School)

The session will be chaired by Rebecca Riley (ESCoE Director and King's Business School) and followed by a networking reception.
