Opening the floodgates on water pollution nuisance claims?

Charity & Causes

This year’s David Hall Conversation will consider the impact of a Supreme Court decision for communities concerned about water pollution.

Continuing the legacy of Professor David Hall's dedication to environmental discourse, we invite you to a night of insightful conversation regarding the impact of a Supreme Court decision for communities concerned about water pollution. The groundbreaking decision in the Manchester Ship Canal Ltd v United Utilities case, in which ELF intervened, opens the floodgates on private nuisance claims against water companies for illegal sewage discharge.

This year’s David Hall Conversation will feature insights for communities from ELF’s wonderful intervention team: solicitor Sarah Moore (then of Hausfeld, now of Leigh Day) and Stephen Hockman KC (Head of Chambers at 6 Pump Court), ELF’s advocate. Their conversation will be chaired by Nick Flynn (ELF Trustee and Head of Legal at Avaaz). Unpicking the Supreme Court’s judgment and bringing insights from their legal practice, Sarah and Stephen will explore what options may be available to communities to protect their rivers. They will also explore what action is already being taken by communities looking to tackle sewage pollution.

So please do join us on the evening of 11th December 2024 at King's College London, in Bush House Lecture Theatre 1 (map available here). Doors open at 6.30pm and the event will start at 7pm. Drinks and canapes will be served after the discussion.

The event is free to attend but places must be booked. Tickets can be booked via this page.

We would love to see you in person but online places are also available and can be booked separately here.
