Parliamentarians on their Past: Campaigning, Petitions, & People Power

Government & Politics

Join a team of researchers to reflect on the historical significance of petitions and campaigning, for both public and MPs, in the 20th c.

Why sign a petition -- and why do campaigners keep coming back to them?

Join the History of Parliament and the Petitioning and People Power in Twentieth Century Britain project on 5 July, as we explore one of the main ways people interacted with politicians - besides voting - whether in Parliament, Downing Street, or local councils.

Drawing on oral history interviews with ex-MPs by the History of Parliament and other testimony, a team of researchers into twentieth-century British history will provide historical insights into how people understood democracy and Parliament's place within it. Crucially, they will showcase the views of campaigners and the officials and parliamentarians receiving petitions.

The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and a drinks reception.

Join us on 5 July, 18:00-20:00 in the Jubilee Room of Westminster Hall, Houses of Parliament.

About

The History of Parliament Oral History Project was established in 2011, with intention to interview as many former Members of Parliament as possible on their careers and political experiences. With more than ten years of interviews with over 200 former MPs, this sound archive contains hours of memories of the political events that shaped the late 20th century. As part of the interview process, former MPs are asked about their experiences of local campaigns and petitioning, and many of these reflections have been used by the PPP20 project.

The Petitioning and People Power in Twentieth Century Britain project is a three-year project, bringing together experts in the history of petitioning, political studies of public engagement, and twentieth-century British society to investigate petitioning as an activity and an institution.

The project consists of four researchers, bringing together the expertise of three different universities: Dr Anna Bocking-Welch (University of Liverpool), Professor Richard Huzzey (Durham University), Professor Cristina Leston-Bandeira (University of Leeds), & Dr Henry Miller (Durham University).
