Professor Stephen Price presenting Precision Surgery for Glioblastomas - Improving Surgical Outcomes

Glioblastomas are the most common primary malignant brain tumor. Most of the recent improvements their treatment are due to improvements in surgery. Although many would consider surgery as the most personalized treatment, the variation in resection between surgeons suggests there remains a need for objective measures to determine the best surgical treatment for individualizing therapy for glioblastoma. We propose applying a personalised medicine approach to improve outcomes for patients. We suggest looking at personalising preoperative preparation, improving the resection target by understanding what needs removing and what ca not be removed, and better patient selection with personalised rehabilitation plans for all patients.

About the Presenter

Stephen Price is the Professor of Neurosurgical Oncology and Hon. Consultant Neurosurgeon at the University of Cambridge. He is the surgical lead for neuro-oncology and has a clinical interest in surgical oncology for gliomas, awake craniotomy and brain mapping, fluorescence guided surgery and patient reported outcomes.

He qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, and after general surgical training, undertook neurosurgical training in Nottingham, Romford and Cambridge. He was a locum consultant at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery before taking up a consultant post in Cambridge. He was awarded an NIHR Clinician Scientist Fellowship and was the only surgeon to be awarded an NIHR Career Development Fellowship. He is the Pick Fellow in Clinical Medicine at Queens’ College, Cambridge and is Director of Studies for Clinical Medicine.

His research interest is in using advanced MRI and PET imaging to understand pathological changes in the tumour and surrounding brain, as well as cognitive outcomes in brain tumour patients. His Precision Surgery programme aims to develop individualised surgical treatment volumes for patients to maximise the amount of tumour we remove and minimise morbidity. He is the Co-Director of the CRUK-Minderoo Brain Cancer Virtual Institute and the Director of the Cambridge Brain Tumour Imaging Laboratory. He is the Diagnostics Theme lead for the NIHR Brain Health Technology Research Centre. He is chief investigator for the PRaM-GBM study (predicting sites of tumour progression in newly diagnosed glioblastomas) and SCARF-BT – a rehabilitation feasibility trial for emotional recognition in brain tumour patients. He has a strong interest in training and is a member of the Neurosurgery Specialist Advisory Committee. He is the Secretary of the British Neuro-oncology Society. He is an executive board member of the European Association of Neuro-oncology (EANO) and is the past Chair of the EANO Education Committee.

There will be a drinks & networking reception after the lecture
