Shifting gear: How can we accelerate the transition to sustainable travel?

Location: LT201, Skempton Building, Imperial College London

The transport sector is one of the largest emitters of planet-heating greenhouse gases, which contribute to rising land and ocean temperatures and promote conditions for increasing extreme weather events around the world. Air pollutants emitted by transport also contribute to smog and poor air quality, which have negative impacts on human health.

Private sector and government strategies, policies and legislation are pointing in the right direction, and public opinion backs action on climate, but progress so far is insufficient for tackling the health and environmental crises on our doorsteps.

What needs to happen to accelerate the switch to cleaner alternatives? And what role should businesses, local communities, and institutions such as universities play?

Join us to take a closer look at the climate and health impacts of travel, explore possible solutions, and discuss what organisations can do to enable the transition to sustainable travel options with an expert panel at this Imperial College London event.

Panel speakers include:

  • Harriet Wallace, Director of Sustainability Strategy, Imperial College London
  • Dr Audrey de Nazelle, Senior Lecturer in Air Pollution Managmenet, Imperial College London
  • Eoin Devane, Senior Analyst – Transport, The Climate Change Committee
  • Other speakers TBC

Feed into the College’s upcoming Sustainable Travel Policy. We have developed a policy and are now engaging the College community for their thoughts. We are open to feedback in this scoping stage and open to amending the ‘how’ aspect of the policy in order to ensure it works well in practice, with the intention to finalise the travel policy in the Autumn Term.
