Thinking Beyond Your Discipline. A lecture by Professor Kehinde Andrews

Family & Education

Keynote Lecture by Professor Kehinde Andrews, part of the University of Westminster's Graduate School Festival 2022.

Thinking beyond our own disciplines can often bring rewards to our research, but for research which aims to challenge structures and beliefs which have resulted in marginalisation and oppression, it is vital. Disciplinary boundaries are the result of particular historical processes and worldviews and so have the prejudices and power imbalances of those built into them. In this lecture, Professor Andrews will talk about the ways that going beyond disciplinary boundaries has been key in his own work, and about both the struggles and achievements involved in that.

Kehinde Andrews is Professor of Black Studies at Birmingham City University. His books include Back to Black: Retelling Black Radicalism for the 21st Century (2018). His first book was Resisting Racism: Race, Inequality and the Black Supplementary School Movement (2013). He led the development of the Black Studies degree at Birmingham City and is director of the Centre for Critical Social Research; founder of the Harambee Organisation of Black Unity; and co-chair of the Black Studies Association.

Venue: Fyvie Hall, Ground floor, 309 Regent Street, London W1B 2HW

The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
