A panel discussion on the Law Commission’s consultation - ‘Criminal Appeals: Issues Paper’

The Criminal Appeal Lawyers’ Association (CALA) is delighted to co-host this panel discussion with the Law Commission and APPEAL, designed to coincide with its consultation on its issues paper on Criminal Appeals published in July this year.

The consultation, which closes on 31 October 2023, invites views on the law about appeals in criminal cases, including the tests applied by the Court of Appeal and the Criminal Cases Review Commission; and laws governing post-trial retention and disclosure of evidence.

This evening seminar, which will include speakers from the Law Commission and the CALA committee will comprise of two parts, considering reforms in respect of both the Court of Appeal and the Criminal Cases Review Commission. Delegates are warmly invited to attend and ask questions. It is hoped that the event will assist those seeking to respond to the consultation, which marks a hugely important step in putting criminal appeals on the law reform agenda.

Speakers include:

Professor Penney Lewis, Law Commission

Robert Kaye, Law Commission

Matt Foot, APPEAL

Abigail Bright, CALA & Doughty Street Chambers

David Emanuel KC, CALA & Garden Court Chambers

The event will be followed by a drinks reception.
