Urban Mined is a project exploring a new life for unwanted materials found in the demolition of buildings

We have a duty of care to materials found in the demolition of buildings and this project considers socially environmentally and economically sustainable alternatives to their current disposal.

A team of designers from Good Waste, Other Today and Batch.Space has been harvesting materials normally rejected from the demolition recycling process - those deemed contaminants, deleterious or illegal.

They have been experimenting with the lowest grade of glass aggregate - a crushed mix of building, domestic and contaminated glass and post-demolition plaster board. With both, the team has found circular ways of working with the materials that make it possible to sculpt them into architectural forms that celebrate their flaws.

Made in response to a hackathon organised by Clear Village as part of the Circular Construction in Regenerative Cities (CIRCuIT) project, funded by the EUโ€™s Horizon 2020 programme, the exhibition will serve as a springboard for further conversations with architects, designers and industry professionals discussing the opportunities and challenges of scaling these material techniques to show that the only barrier to working with these contaminated materials are our own preconceptions.

On display will be a structure created from the transformed waste and the tools and samples used to manipulate the materials. With thanks to Roy Hatfield, URM and EMR.

Join us at Hackney Depot on the evening of Tueday 22nd June for the private view or book a visit between 23rd - 26th June.
