Despite the best efforts of project managers, some projects are beyond hope of rescue. When that happens, work stops, lawyers from each party are called in and what can be a long and costly legal process starts up.
Expert witnesses play an important role in the process of untangling the fallout and advising the courts on technical matters, but IT expert witnesses have had a very bad press lately following the well-publicised issues with computer evidence in the Post Office Horizon affair.
This session will explain how the legal process works, the expert witnessesβ independent role (and how that is different from consultancy) and what an expert witness is looking for when assessing what has gone wrong, which includes, most importantly from a legal and contractual perspective, who is responsible for any technical problems.
Gill Hunt is an expert witness who has acted in IT project disputes for 25 years across a range of projects, from small website disputes through to the Β£600M dispute between the NHS and Fujitsu, and most recently spent a week in court giving evidence on a Β£100M dispute between TCS and DBS.
The technical material involved takes in everything from (supposedly) straightforward out-of-the-box implementations, through complex infrastructure migrations, to embedded systems for baggage handling and 3D visualisations of luxury cars.
She is a Council Member at The Academy of Experts, the professional body for experts.
